Where is our right to demonstrate?

Dear students and professora, I would like to share with you some of the recent events that are taking place in Barcelona, my hometown.

In 2011 the local of a bank was occupied in the neighbourhood of Gracia. Last Monday this place was evicted. The neighbours of Gracia turned the place into a social center with different activities for people of all ages. You could get freed clothes and there was a "food network" for people who simply don't believe in the expiry date.

Last Monday this place was evicted by the "mossos d'esquadra" and this has lead to many protests. This entire week people were on the street claiming the return of the social center. As a response they got violence from the police and manipulation from the media.

I would like to share these videos with you.
Manipulation of the media: here  you can see a woman tried to explain that she is in favor of the social center and the journalist walks away because this discourse is not in line with the interests of the media; this is one of the many cases.
This is what Visual Culture has become in Spain, a manipulation of reality.
Violence on the street (policeman attacking the manifestants) Where is our right to speak?

  1. Thanks for sharing, Nina. Indeed, as we have had the opportunity to discuss in our last class, the media and the repressive forces are tentatively controlling a wave of change that cannot really be put back any longer. Social justice will prevail in the long run, I believe.
