WILL Lab — Writing, Innovation, Learning & Language Laboratory
@ the University of Lisbon (ULisboa)
WILL Lab aims to help students work on
their writing assignments and to develop their critical thinking. With the help
of Professor Marilyn Zucker, from Stony Brook University, U.S.A., we
are going to offer a series of preliminary encounters with students interested
in helping us launch this innovative project.
Students’
input is going to be crucial at this point, to help us evaluate our ideas and
create the best writing laboratory at the service of our academic community.
We
will have 9 individual encounters
with volunteer students. To participate you
should:
1)
bring a printed copy of one of your current essays, written in English (from 2
to 4 pages);
2)
this should be a work in progress that will be subjected to assessment;
3)
please, bring the course syllabus and the guidelines to your essay, so that the
team working with you may understand exactly what the Professor who asked you
this piece expects you to achieve.
The
nine 45 minute individual meetings
will take place on the following dates and schedules:

Professor
Marilyn Zucker, an
experienced teacher of writing who has also taught personal narrative at our
faculty, will generously donate her expertise and discuss your text with
you. She will focus on higher order concerns (structure, paragraphs, coherence,
organization of ideas, etc.). Professor Diana V. Almeida will also be present
during these sessions, to learn and observe.
At
the end of this communal experience, we will have a round table, to get the students’ feedback, in order to better
structure WILL Lab.
It
will take place on April 15, 12 am-1.30 pm.
We
will discuss the following questions:
How
useful was the tutoring experience?
Was
it more useful on a grammatical or textual level?
Would
you consider coming back to another individual session?
Did
this change your perception of the academic writing process?
Do
you believe that opening a writing center at the ULisboa would be a good idea?
What
are your suggestions about the functioning of WILL Lab?
Thanks
for your interest in this project and make sure you sign up with a reachable
email address so that appointments can be confirmed!
